Wind Turbines – Why Not Build Your Own

0 komentar
What is your first impression of wind turbines? Do you imagine that the people who make them must be highly qualified technicians who have studied for years?
What would you say, if one of your neighbours said that they were going to assemble their own wind turbines in order to produce their own electricity?
The fact is that it is not actually very hard to make a wind turbine. You definitely do not have to have been to university to do it and you do not have to be an amateur electrician either. You will, however, need a good set of plans in order to put up an operational wind turbine.
There are different sources of plans for wood turbines. You could go to a hobbyist shop, a DIY store or the Internet. If you look on the Internet, search for a web site specializing in alternative energy technology.
Once you have you manual, handbook or drawings for making wind turbines, you ought to study it well and get any queries you have answered on forums on the Internet.
If you believe that I am exaggerating how simple it is to build a wind turbine, do not forget that people have been making windmills and water pumps for hundreds of years without the benefit of power tools or contemporary materials.
The only difference between those early devices and a wind turbine for producing electricity is the addition of wiring and a coil, which you will buy anychoice.
The basics of building a wind turbine involve building a tower to place it on; installing batteries to take the generated power; the fan and the tail assemblies. The tools that you will require to accomplish this are fairly basic too: bricklaying tools, carpentry tools and a few spanners, but that really depends on how much you sub-contract out.
You will almost surely have to buy the turbine, fan and tail section yourself as one unit, because, if you want a high-powered unit, this section will need to be professional, not that it cannot be manufactured locally.
You will be able to maintain it yourself as well, if you want. These fan blades can be 1.2 metres (4 feet) in length each, which is something that you will have to bear in mind when constructing your tower.
You may require a bit of professional assistance when you build your first wind turbine, but use the experience to learn as much as you can, so that you will be able to be more independent on your next one. You could even turn the experience into a profession, because there is a chronic shortage of people who know anything about wind turbines.

Drywall Ceiling How to Build It and Tips to Make the Job Easier

0 komentar
As a do-it-yourselfer, you usually do all the construction jobs in your home yourself. But, when it comes to hanging a drywall ceiling, you will find that you really can’t do it yourself and you will eventually seek the help of another person unless you use rented equipments, such as a drywall jack.
You have to keep in mind that drywall panels are huge, bulky, and can be very awkward to handle. If you prefer renting a drywall jack, then you will find that most home improvement centers will be able to provide you with it. The cable mechanisms on drywall jacks are not that difficult to operate and it will do a great job to hold the drywall secure as you attach it to the ceiling.
First off, you have to have the right tools and materials before you start the project. In addition to drywall jacks, you will need a hammer, a drill with a screwdriver bit and you will obviously need screws and nails to fix the drywall in place. It is also important for you to measure your ceiling twice in order for you to determine how many drywall panels you need for the entire project. And, get a little extra drywall panels in case you make mistakes when attaching the drywall on to your ceiling.
The first thing that you have to do when attaching drywall ceilings is to mark the joists. You have to find the boards, which will function as the ceiling joists. You can do this by tapping along the wall studs with a hammer and at the same time, following up the wall to the ceiling. Then, you have to mark where the boards are located with a pencil. This is basically where you will need to attach the drywall on and it will make it easier for you to find them than finding them while you are screwing or nailing the drywalls on.
You also have to measure where the light fixture goes on the drywall. This is basically where you have to cut out a hole in order to accommodate the area of the ceiling.
After marking the joists, the next step is the hardest step that you will ever do when attaching drywall ceilings. This part is where you actually build a drywall ceiling. If you don’t have someone to help you out, you can alchoices use a drywall jack to hold the drywall panel in place as you attach it on the ceiling.
When nailing the panel on to the joist, you have to make sure that you do it half an inch from the edges. This will prevent the edges to crack or split. Do this on ever corner of the drywall. After doing this, it’s time for you to remove the jack and hammer in nails at six or seven inch intervals around each panel.
Try to countersink the nails or screws on the panels as this will allow you to cover up the heads of the nails or screws with compound.
Learning how to build a drywall ceiling is not that difficult. But, it will require you to exert a lot of hard work and effort in order for you to get the job done.

The 4 Important Steps of How to Build a Chicken Coop

0 komentar
When you build a chicken coop, there are four main elements that you want to keep in mind. We will cover them in this article, and when youre finished you will be ready to move onto the next step, getting the plans and breaking out the power tools.
The first step we will cover is size. This has a direct effect on the number of birds you can hold and is often one of the first mistakes beginners make. After that you will be able to pick out the style that best suits your needs and the amount of space you have.
Once you have this information, you will want to look at building both a healthy and safe coop. More on that in a moment.
Lastly you will want to make sure that you build a nice looking hen house. But you may be surprised when you find out how important this step really is.
Some of you may already be itching to break out the power tools, so I will get started and show you how to build a chicken coop.
Step #1: Picking the Right SizeYou may be thinking that this is an understood part of building a chicken coop. You know where you want to put the chicken coop and you know how many chickens you want, isnt that enough? The answer is no. Just because you have a spot picked out, that doesnt mean it is the most ideal. You may also run into trouble if your desired hen house doesnt match the number of chickens you plan to get.
Each chicken requires at least 3 square feet of room inside of the chicken coop. As you can see, this will directly influence how many chickens you can hold, and where you can build your coop.
As you can imagine, if the chicken coop becomes too crowded, your hens will spend the majority of their time fighting for room rather than laying eggs. Since this is the reason, most people build chicken coops, it will waste both the money and time youve invested. So now is the perfect time to decide how many chickens you plan to raise.
In the event that there is too much room in the coop later you always have the options to add another hen or two.
Step #2: Choosing the Right Type of Chicken CoopAs you already might know, there are two types of chicken coops. The first is portable, and is often referred to as a chicken tractor. The other is fixed and is usually built to hold more chickens. Lets look at the two types and you can get a better idea of what best suits your needs.
First well look at the portable ones. There are several benefits to building a portable chicken coop, besides being portable they are easier to maintain. Since you can move the coop around, maintenance is much easier. Instead of bringing the tools to the coop, you can bring the coop to your tools. Cleaning the coop is also easier with portable hen houses.
But there is a downside, and we need to cover that as well. If you build a portable chicken coop, dont expect it to last for a long time. Portable chicken coops are not nearly as stable as their fixed counterpart.
Fixed or static hen houses are much more stable than the portable ones, and a well built coop can last for many years. Of course you need to plan the location for your coop very carefully. Once it is finished, moving it will be a very time consuming process.
Here are some things to consider when you build a static roost. First, chickens need a lot of sunlight. Make sure to build the chicken coop so that it gets as much sun as it can each day. But you will also want provide your coop with protection from the other elements. Strong rain or wind can be a problem, thats why it is a good idea to build your coop under a group of trees or next to a larger building.
Another thing to keep in mind when you build a fixed hen house is that it shouldnt be built on low ground. Make sure to build it on the a higher part of your yard. If you get strong storms, your chicken coop could become flooded. If this happens, you learn what the expression "madder than a wet hen" means.
Step #3: Keeping Your Coop SafeOne of the most important aspects of learning how to build a chicken coop is keeping your birds safe.
There are many different types of predators that will prey upon your hens if you arent careful. This can be anything from the neighborhood cats and dogs to less likely threats such as rats. If you live in the country, you may also be at risk of attracting larger predators.
These can include foxes, coyotes and badgers. You will want to assure that you use strong enough fencing to keep the more determined wild animals out. Make sure to bury your fence deep enough in the ground to keep out animals that try to dig their way into the coop.
Dont forget the threat from above. Hawks will also prey upon chickens, so it might be necessary to cover your chickens run with a roof or fencing.
Step #4: Keeping Up AppearancesLearning how to build a chicken coop can be a really fun experience which also makes a great family project.
A well built chicken coop should be both healthy and comfortable for your chickens but also look nice. Nobody likes an eyesore, and if you dont take the time to finish out your coop, you might get complaints rather than compliments from your neighbors.
This would be a shame, since a chicken coop can add a unique element to your yards landscaping. One that will have your neighbors talking for all of the right reason, and your family supplied with fresh eggs every morning for breakfast.
If you build your chicken coop in the city, you will want to check your city ordinances for any that regulate if and how you can build your coop.

How to Build a Shed The Simple Steps to Consider When Building Outdoor Storage

How to Build a Shed

Building My First Shed

When I was building my first shed, thats when I learned that the old saying was true... "If you can build a house, then you can build a shed." Leaning how to build a shed takes planning, a bit of patience, and some hard work. But, if you have the time, its a monumentally rewarding experience.
The first place that you have to start is with the government. Do they have local ordinances? Do you have to get a permit? Your local zoning and building codes may require certain things. Or, if you are like me, they may restrict the type of shed due to historical society stuff. Annoying, but manageable.

Steps To Build Shed

Once youre OK with the legal stuff, its time to get to planning. The biggest decision you will need to make is whether your shed will have a concrete foundation or a cement one. Since this was my first shed, we build a wood framed one. Since then, Ive learned that a cement floor can be more sturdy and durable. But, many people only build wood shed floors. So, the choice is really up to you.
The next things you need to do when you learn how to build a shed, is realize that you need to determine whether you live in a frost zone. If the ground freezes, youll need to put in a frost protected foundation. A frost protected foundation will help your shed withstand the winter environment better, and should strongly be considered before starting to build a shed.
In terms of lumber, always use treated wood. Treated wood will resist wood rot and wood eating insects. Pressure treated lumber is great as well.  Using pressure treated lumber will keep the shed from being as susceptible to "warping" due to its dramatically different climates.
Another tip that I learned on building my first shed, is to reinforce the lips of the door, especially when building a wood framed building. The door will get a lot of wear and tear. Especially if you are using the shed to store outdoor items like lawn mowers, going in and out of a door will cause a lot of damage. So, install into your shed a small metal frame over the edge of the door. This will keep the door edge from getting damaged.
Another great how to build a shed tip is to make sure your roofing material is high quality. When we are building a shed, we often think of the inside, and even the sides, and skimp on the roof. But, the roof takes the brunt of the weather. So, make sure you install both flashing, underlayment, and the same roof materials you would install the roof of a house.
And, make sure you also cover the exterior of the walls and roof with asphalt felt paper. This material will help catch any leaks that are formed with age.
But, the most important tip when building a shed is learning to be safe. Take your time and be sure that youre not in danger of injury. If you are planning your shed to be built in a weekend, build it in 3 weekends. That way, youre not in a rush and can build the shed correctly and safely.
These tips are only a few of how to build a shed. With time, patience, and hard work, your shed will be a long testament to your handiness and a great addition to your home for many, many years to come.

How to Build a Chicken Coop Important Factors to Consider Before You Build a Chicken Coop

0 komentar
When you first start your research on how to build a chicken coop, you may quickly find out that it can be one of the most confusing tasks facing the beginning chicken farmer. There are thousands of different variations, along with a myriad of factors that need to be taken into account before you decide on a final design. And thats just for the chicken coop plans not any of the other factors such as material choices, construction methods, or placement of the coop to just to name a few.  Below youll find three of the most important concepts that can help you before you get started.
Chicken Coops Provide Shelter and ProtectionThe main purpose of a chicken coop is to provide protection to the chickens.Chickens need to be kept warm, dry, and sheltered from the elements, much like their human counterparts! Rain, snow, and wind can all be detrimental to the welfare of the chickens. This can lead to decreased egg or meat production and unhealthy chickens. Not something youll want to deal with when youre first starting out. Keep in mind that the chicken doesnt care what the coop looks like.It only wants it warm, dry, and comfortable. You on the other hand may want to make it look as good as it can, and theres nothing wrong with that. Some people have designed their chicken coops to look like a childs playhouse in order to fit in with the surroundings of their property, while others have built bare bones coops out of scrap wood and pallets. As long as the chickens needs are met, the sky is the limit as to what you build. But as a first timer, youll probably be better off using commercially available plans that have been tested over time.
Protection from PredatorsWhile this certainly falls under the shelter and protection part above, its so important that it needs to be emphasized. Chickens are basically defenseless animals that need to be completely protected from predators.Chickens are especially vulnerable to attacks from raccoons, coyotes, foxes, hawks, and even some dogs. Your chicken coop needs to be an impenetrable fortress for the chickens, providing them complete safety from any of these predators. There isnt much worse than finding that your flock has been ravaged by a predator.Keep them safe!
Clean Chickens are Happy ChickensNot only is it true for humans, its true for chickens too.You need to design your coop so that it provides easy access for you to perform frequent cleaning. In order to provide a place where chickens are healthy and happy, they need to have clean surroundings. This means that youll need access in order to change their bedding and clean up after them on a regular basis. This is often the most important design detail that youll need to consider since its effective implementation benefits you directly. If its hard to clean out the chicken coop, the less likely you are to do it, and in turn the less healthy and happy the chickens will be.Keep them clean and their production will increase.

Build a Workbench

0 komentar
For $175 you can build a bench that will retire after you do. I’ve hauled my grandfather’s workbench across snow-covered Appalachian mountains, down narrow stairwells and into a dirt-floored garage that should have been torn down during the Eisenhower administration. I’ve built a lot of good stuff on that bench, but now it’s time to retire the old horse. For starters, the bench is too low for the way I work. And the top is pockmarked with three different shapes and sizes of dog holes. And during the last few years I’ve become fed up with the tool tray. The only thing it seems designed to hold is enough sawdust for a family of gerbils. So I need a new bench, but there’s no way I’m going to spend $1,200 to $1,400 for a high-quality bench from Hoffman & Hammer or Ulmia.
Enter Bob Key from Georgia. He and his son have been building benches using off-the-rack pine for a few years. I was impressed with their idea. So I spent a week reading every book on benches I could find. I pored over the woodworking catalogs. And after a lot of figuring I came up with a simple plan: Build a bench for less than $175.
Believe it or not, I came in 92 cents under budget and ended up with a bench that is tough, sturdy and darn versatile. I made a few compromises when choosing the hardware to keep the cost down, but I designed the bench so that it can later be upgraded with a nice tail vise. However, I made no compromises in the construction of the top or base. You can dance on this bench.
Let’s Go Shopping
OK friends, it’s time to make your shopping list. First a word about the wood. I priced my lumber from a local Lowe’s. It was tagged as Southern yellow pine, appearance-grade. Unlike a lot of dimensional stock, this stuff is pretty dry and knot-free. Even so, take your time and pick through the store’s pile of 12-foot-long 2 x 8s with care to get the best ones possible. You can hide a few tight knots in the top, but with luck you won’t have to.
Here’s the story on the hardware. The bolts, nuts and washers are used to connect the front rails to the two ends of the bench. Using this hardware, we’ll borrow a technique used by bed makers to build a joint that is stronger than any mortise and tenon. The Bench Dog and Wonder Dog will keep you from having to buy an expensive tail vise. Using these two simple pieces of hardware, you can clamp almost anything to your bench for planing, sanding and chopping. The traditional face vise goes on the front of your bench and is useful for joinery and opening cans of peanut butter.
Preparing Your Lumber
Cut your lumber to length. You’ve probably noticed that your wood has rounded corners and the faces are probably less than glass-smooth. Your first task is to use your jointer and planer to remove those rounded edges and get all your lumber down to 1-3/8" thick.
Once your lumber is thicknessed, start working on the top. If this is your first bench, you can make the top, then throw it up on sawhorses to build the base. The top is made from 1-3/8" x 3-3/8" x 70" boards turned on edge and glued face-to-face. It will take five of your 2 x 8s to make the top. Build the top in stages to make the task more manageable. Glue up a few boards, then run the assembly through the jointer and planer to get them flat. Make a few more assemblies like this, then glue all the assemblies together into one big top.
When you finally glue up the whole top, you want to make sure you keep all the boards in line. This will save you hours of flattening the top later with a hand plane. See the photo above for a life-saving tip when you get to this point. After the glue is dry, square the ends of your assembled top. If you don’t have a huge sliding table on your table saw, try cutting the ends square using a circular saw (the top is so thick you’ll have to make a cut from both sides). Or you can use a hand saw and a piece of scrap wood clamped across the end as a guide.
Build the Base
routed hole
The base is constructed using mortise-and-tenon joinery. Essentially, the base has two end assemblies that are joined by two rails. The end assemblies are built using big 1"-thick, 2"-long tenons. The front rails are attached to the ends using 1" x 1" mortise-and-tenon joints and the 6"-long bolts. Begin working on the base by cutting all your pieces to size. The 2¾"-square legs are made from two pieces of pine laminated together. Glue and clamp the legs and set them aside. Now turn your attention to cutting the tenons on the rails. It’s a good idea to first make a “test” mortise in a piece of scrap so you can fit your tenons as they are made. I like to make my tenons on the table saw using a dado stack. Place your rails face down on your table saw and use a miter gauge to nibble away at the rails until the tenons are the right size. Because pine is soft, be sure to make the shoulders on the edges 1" wide on the upper side rails. This precaution will prevent your tenons from blowing out the top of your legs.
Now use your tenons to lay out the locations of your mortises. See the photo at right for how this works. Clamp a piece of scrap to your drill press to act as a fence and chain-drill the mortises in the legs. Make your mortises about 1/16" deeper than your tenons are long. This will give you a little space for any excess glue.
Once you’ve got your mortises drilled, use a mortise chisel to square the round corners. Make sure your tenons fit, then dry-fit your base. Label each joint so you can reassemble the bench later.
Bed Bolts
There’s a bit of a trick to joining the front rails to the legs. Workbenches, you see, are subject to a lot of racking back and forth. A plain old mortise-and-tenon joint just won’t hack it. So we bolt it. First study the diagram at left to see how these joints work. Now here’s the best way to make them.
First chuck a 1" Forstner bit in your drill press to cut the countersink in the legs for the bolt head. Drill the countersinks, then chuck a 3/8"-brad-point bit in your drill press and drill in the center of the counterbore through the leg and into the mortise.
Now fit the front rails into the leg mortises. Chuck that 3/8" bit into your hand drill and drill as deeply as you can through the leg and into the rail. The hole in the leg will guide the bit as it cuts into the rail. Then remove the leg and drill the 3/8" hole even deeper. You probably will have to use an extra-long drill bit for this.
OK, here’s the critical part. Now you need to cut two small mortises on each rail. These mortises will hold a nut and a washer and must intersect the 3/8" holes you just drilled. With the leg and rail assembled, carefully figure out where the mortises need to go. Drill the mortises in the rails as shown in the photo. Now test your assembly. Thread the joint with the bolt, two washers and a nut. Use a ratchet and wrench to pull everything tight. If your bench ever wobbles in your lifetime, it’s probably going to be a simple matter of tightening these bolts to fix the problem. Remember to tell this to your children.
Base Assembly
This bench has a good-sized shelf between the front rails. Cut the ledgers and slats from your scrap. Also cut the two cleats that attach the top to the base. Now sand everything before assembly — up to 150 grit should be fine.
Begin assembly by gluing up the two end assemblies. Put glue in the mortises and clamp up the ends until dry. Then, for extra strength, peg the tenons using 3/8"-thick dowel. I had some lying around. If you don’t, buy the dowel at the hardware store and add $1 to your bottom line.
Screw the ledgers to the front rails. Make sure they don’t cover the mortises for the bed bolts, or you are going to be in trouble. Now bolt the front rails to the two ends (no glue necessary). Rub a little Vaseline or grease on the threads first because after your bench is together you want to seal up those mortises with hot-melt glue. The Vaseline will ensure your bolts will turn for years to come.
Screw the cleats to the top of the upper side rails. Then drill oval-shaped holes in the cleats that will allow you to screw the top to the base. Now screw the seven slats to the ledgers.
Finishing the Top
Before you attach your top, it’s best to drill your dog holes and attach the vise. Lay out the location of the two rows of dog holes using the diagram. I made a simple jig to guide a ¾" auger bit in a brace and bit. The jig is shown in action in the photo above.
Now position your vise on the underside of the top and attach it with the bolts provided by the manufacturer. This Czech-made vise is of surprising quality, with a heavy-duty Acme-thread screw. The only downside to the vise is you are going to have to make your own wooden face. I must confess I didn’t have enough wood left over from my 2 x 8s to make the face. So I made it from a small piece of scrap from another project. You’ll need to drill three holes in the wooden face so it fits over the bars, but this is pretty self-evident when you pull the vise out of the box. All the European benches I’ve seen have a bead cut on the edges. I’m not one to argue with tradition, so I used a beading bit in a router table to cut beads on mine, too.
Make the vise’s handle from a length of 1"-diameter oak dowel. My handle is 20" long, which is just the right length to miss whacking me in the head at every turn. I’m a tall guy, so you might want to make yours a bit shorter.
You are now almost done. It’s necessary to flatten the top. Use “winding sticks” to determine if your top is flat. Winding sticks are simply identical, straight lengths of hardwood. Put one on one end of the top and the other on the far end. Now crouch down so your eye is even with the sticks. If your top is flat, the sticks will line up perfectly. If not, you’ll quickly see where you need work. Use a jack plane to flatten the high spots. Then sand your top and rag on a couple coats of an oil/varnish blend on the base and top.
With the bench complete, I was pleased with the price and the time it took, which was about 30 hours. However, I’m now itching to build a cabinet beneath the bench and to add a leg jack for planing the edges of long boards. Maybe I’ll get to that next issue, or maybe I’ll let a future granddaughter take care of those details.PW

How to Build a Deck
The first thing about learning how to build a deck is to understand the components and terminology of what goes into a deck. Obviously the first thing is to have some deck ideas of what you wish to do and have drawn up or purchased some deck plans.
Deck designs can be as simple or as complicated as you like, however the more complicated the more cost to having plans drawn up and in materials required. Most people who are looking to learn how to build a deck are likely to want an entertainment area either as a new project or an addition to an existing deck for the family home. Timber decks are a fantastic place to entertain friends and for relaxing in an outdoor situation, bbqs, parties, you name it decks are a great outdoor retreat.
Basic deck structures. The components of a deck comprise of; footings, posts, bearers, joists, decking boards and balustrades.
Assuming we are learning how to build a timber deck we will cover timber deck span tables towards the end.
Starting from the ground up you will need a sound foundation, Your foundation will comprise of posts set into footings of concrete. These posts will support the main bearers or beams. On top of the bearers we lay the deck joists which in turn have the decking boards laid on top.
These guidelines are suggestions only, please check your local building regulations before beginning any deck structure, and always follow all safety precautions.
Materials. For the posts, beams and joists you can use hardwoods or soft woods. Treated pine is the most sustainable timber and is an excellent choice for the majority of situations.
Decking timbers.Again treated pine is a good choice as is redwood, western red cedar, Cyprus and gum. In various parts of the world hardwoods such as kwilla and balua are available however I wonder about the sustainability of using rain forest timber for decks. Also increasing on the market are composite decking products, these materials are getting better every day, not only looking as good as timber but are rot and pest free and dont need constant maintenance and re sealing as timber decks do.
Deck Span tables.These will differ in many areas and also with the type of timber used. As a general guide;
Foundation posts will be 4"x 4" ( 100 x 100mm). Your post hole dimensions will depend upon the quality of ground you are laying foundations on.
Bearers and beams. Depending upon the distances to span the size of the timber will increase. the further the span the heavier the timber in size will be. Typically a short span of say 6 feet (1800 mm) would require a beam of 4" x 8", up to say 12 feet ( 3600) you would go for a beam of 4" x 10".
Deck joists - When spanning beam spacings of up to 8" (2400 mm) you will need 6 or 8" x 2" ( 190 x 50 ) when in doubt go heavier than what you think you need, for spans up to 10 or 12 feet ( 3000 - 3600 mm) opt for 10 x 2 joists.
Learning how to build a deck is very straight forward and is within the capabilities of anyone who can read a plan and wield a hammer, there is not much that can go wrong as long as you follow well written deck plans.

DIY Platform Bed Plans Your Best Tool to Build Your Bed Quickly

0 komentar
DIY platform bed plans were very helpful when my son asked me to help him build a bed. I had purchased a set of woodwork plans a while ago for my shed but I didnt realize that I had a lot of bed plans in that package as well. There was several designs of beds, the list of necessary material including all the hardware and material recommendations. My oldest son moved into his first apartment with his girlfriend. Of course we helped them out and gave them a lot of furniture and her parents did the same. The only thing they didnt have on their list was a bed. They had bought a brand new mattress but they had to put it directly on the floor until they find something. We all did it!
After shopping around for a bed my son asked me if I could help him build one. I taught that it was a good idea and that would save them a lot of money. I remembered the set of plans I purchased the previous year for my shed and I looked into it for bed plans. Of course there was some bed plans, and a lot of them.
I went to my sons house and pulled the plans on is computer. Choosing the bed they wanted was the hardest part of all. They spend all evening looking at all the different designs. I figure Id come back once they agreed on something. The following week end they had printed out their favorite one out of all the DIY platform bed plans available. My son and I carefully checked the material list and went to get everything. The total cost of the wood, red oak by the way, and all the hardware cost less than one third of the price of a platform bed already made. We used a sheet of less expensive plywood for the platform and nice wood to go around it and for the head.
It took us a day to put everything together and the next day to sand a little and apply a nice coat of water based varnish. The result was amazing. My son and his girlfriend think their bed is better than the ones they saw in stores and they got it at a fraction of the cost. The whole thing was so worth it, my son asked me if he could borrow my set of woodwork plans to get some ideas for nightstands.

How to Build a Wooden Chicken Coop DIY Hen House

0 komentar
If you are serious about creating your own handcrafted chicken coop, then you should take a look at this guideline. After you have made a decision on creating a portable, medium-sized, or premium coop, then you can actually construct the whole project in just one day. Just continue reading to get the complete understanding on how everything is going to happen and the place where you can actually acquire high quality plans to construct a chicken coop.
Settling On the Size of the Coop
Depending on your experience in raising chickens, you will have to select the size of the coop that you require. Apparently, the greater number of chickens you intend to raise, the bigger your coop should be. However, it is recommended that you start to create a larger coop than you expect. A lot of chicken raisers begin with a small number of chickens, but the quantity easily and quickly rises.
There are 3 sizes of coop which you can choose from:
- Small and portable
This is a small and simple 3 sided prism kind of cage. This is suitable for kids who are practicing to raise chicks, but as a permanent residence from 2-3 chickens, this option is not a healthy one.
- Medium sized coop
This is excellent if you still aim for portability and desires a less cage type of housing for chickens and much friendlier. You will also have an increase in laid eggs with a huge, well ventilated, box kind of coop like such.
- Premium coop for bigger number of flocks
One thing, this will ensure you that you will have all you require for years of raising chickens. Premium coops will normally mean that you are acquiring a huge chicken house which is sufficiently ventilated where the chickens can comfortably spread their wings and have a nice quantity of nests and eggs.
Placement, Attraction and Function
The positioning of the chicken coop plays a big role in the good laying of eggs and health of your flock. Be sure that you place your chicken coop in a location where the chickens can acquire sufficient sunlight. Flightless birds in general do not fit in cold weather conditions. When you are residing in a region where you can get poor sunlight, consider setting up a warming light for the birds.
For the function, you want to make sure that you have established an area where you can feed the birds easily and the collection of eggs is simple. Some construction plans will provide you how to construct nests which automatically gathers the eggs.
If you are residing in an urban society, attraction is very significant. It is uncomplicated to keep a coop and repaint the chicken house yearly. This will guarantee you that you are maintaining everything at its best.

Woodworking Plans How to Build a Chicken Coop DIY Building of Chicken Houses

Whether you are new to keeping chickens or are an experienced chicken keeper, there comes a time when we need to build a chicken coop. Learning how to build a chicken coop for ourselves can save us an awful lot of money. It may seem like a slightly daunting task but if we follow a set of instructions that are laid out clearly it is surprising how simple and cost effective it can be. If you had plans that would make it as easy as assembling a piece of flat pack furniture dont you think it would be worth the time to do it yourself and save money? Well, maybe that is not the best comparison, we all have problems with that type of assembly!
Before we look at exactly how to build chicken houses cheaply lets take a look at the advantages of building our own chicken house:* It will be much cheaper* A great sense of satisfaction* We can build to the exact dimensions we want* We can modify it to meet our needsNone of these points are an option if we purchase a house for chickens .
If we are on a budget, or even if we know a bespoke house will better suit our needs there are any number of reasons why we should build our own coop for chickens.
What We Need To Build A Chicken House
There are a few things we will need if we are going to begin building cheap houses for chickens ourselves. Dont be put off, it is not as difficult as you may think. Anyone can do it as long as they have the following:
* A good set of plans
* A basic set of tools (drill, hammer, saw)
* Screws and nails
* The necessary lumber
* A weekend to build the chicken houseObviously the most important among these will be a good set of plans. We will want plans that will suit the style and size of the house we wish to build. There are any number of good and very detailed sets of plans available and we will choose the one best suited to our needs.
The amount of tools needed is very basic indeed. If you are very unsure about your carpentry skills then you can even get the lumber yard to cut all the wood to your exact dimensions. This will save you a lot of time and it is very cheap to get the place that you purchase the wood to make the cuts for you. It really will then be as simple as assembling the pieces.
Any quality hen house that we build ourselves will have a few basic design aspects in common and whatever the source of the plans that we use we should ensure that they cover the following comprehensively. If you are designing your own house then you should ensure that you give the following considerable consideration.
What Chicken Houses We Build Will Need
Pay careful consideration to the following, it is very important that all the following points are given some thought, as once built the cheap chicken house will be a permanent structure for some considerable time to come.
* A suitable entry and exit point* Adequate ventilation* A source of light* Shelter from the elements* A warm and comfortable environment* Perches sited correctly for roosting* Chicken nesting boxes and a suitable position for them* Feeders and a water supplyThese are the main points that we need to consider when building chicken houses. Lets take a closer look at them so there no mistakes when we make our D.I.Y chicken house.
Suitable access to the hen houseDepending on the size of the chicken house we will either have a full sized doorway or a simple hatch for the hens to come in and out of. Whatever design is chosen you must ensure that it is always easy to clean out the house when needed.
Adequate VentilationA well ventilated coop is very important. Not only will ventilation keep the birds healthy, it will ensure that noxious fumes do not built up from the chickens droppings that will inevitably collect in the house. A window or a suitable air vent will be the ideal way to ensure that the flow of air through the house is steady and keeps the house a little bit fresher.
A Light SourceFor cold winter days, or times when the birds are inside the coop they will need a good source of light. Not only will this keep them healthy, it is important if we wish to get the maximum number of eggs every day. Hens need a minimum number of hours of daylight if they are to lay regularly. By giving them a light source for maximum hours of daylight we will ensure we get eggs as soon as there are sufficient hours of daylight.
Sufficient ShelterWhatever the design of the hen coop it should be well guarded against the elements. This means that although we want the house ventilated we dont want it to be draughty. This is best achieved by ensuring all vents or windows are sited out of any prevailing winds and that all doors and windows are easily closed if the weather turns bad.
A Warm And Safe EnvironmentHens are not fussy birds but their comfort should be kept in mind when constructing their house. Dont leave nails sticking out where they could damage themselves. Ensure they have good bedding and that the house will stay warm once they are inside. Make sure the hen coop is animal proofed so that no animals can gain access, either to steal the chickens themselves or their feed.
Correct Roosting PerchesHens perch to sleep. They prefer to be off the ground to sleep so we need to construct or incorporate a good perch for them. A roosting perch can either be a log or something similar placed on the ground but better if you use a wide pole or a branch that can be attached off the ground and a little away from the wall. This will be ideal for the hens and will add to their overall comfort.
Chicken Nesting BoxesIdeally the nesting boxes will be well away from the perches. We dont want any chicken droppings landing on or in the nesting boxes. Nesting boxes with a solid and steeply sloped roof are ideal. It stops the birds perching on them and they will stay much cleaner.
You will only need one nesting box for every three birds so ensure it is placed somewhere comfortable and out of the way of the general floor space. If you wish to collect eggs without having to go in to the hen house then make sure the laying boxes are sited against a convenient wall where you can build a hatch that is easily opened form the outside. This will certainly make life easier in the future.
Feeders And Water SuppliesFeeders and water troughs are very inexpensive. If possible always purchase the type that can be hung from a hook. For the water source this is even more important. It will stop it becoming dirty very quickly and will mean that all the birds can get easy access to a fresh drink.
The same applies to the feeders. If possible get a feeder that can be hung up and topped up when needed. Of course, if you are on a tight budget then you can use any suitable container that can be found in the house. I have used simple bowls and old containers in the past as feeders and water troughs. If you have the available funds though, get something a little more professional as just described.
If we bear all the above in mind we will have constructed a great hen coop that will more than meet the standards required to keep healthy chickens. As previously stated, hens are not at all fussy birds. They are very forgiving of less than perfect environments. It is, however, in our best interests to ensure that they are as comfortable and well looked after as possible. A happy chicken will lay an egg a day for a very large percentage of the year.
Build a chicken house to suit both your budget and the number of birds you are going to keep. Bear the above important points in mind and you will be very surprised at just what you can construct with a few days work.
Ensure that you get as good a quality of materials as you possibly can and never rush the construction. It is much better to take your time with the build than to make something that will not suit your present or future needs. I would also recommend starting a compost heap. The mix of droppings and whatever material you use as bedding is a fantastic by product and will work wonders on plants and vegetables when incorporated in to the soil.
Learning how to build a chicken coop may seem daunting but if you follow the above directions and get a good set of suitable plans it will be constructed in a s surprisingly short space of time and will save a tremendous amount of money.

How to Build Deck Railings
The deck on a house is a floored area that extends from the house and is normally roofless. It can be situated at the back, the front or to the side of the house. Deck railings provide a deck its style and distinctiveness and are very crucial in keeping persons safe in that, they are both functional and decorative. In being decorative, they are attractive components adding design to a house and are practical as they enhance protection. It is usually required for decks that are higher than thirty inches above the ground and also for stairs that comprise of five or over steps. The height of a deck railing normally ranges between thirty and forty inches even though specific areas have particular constraints. Standard builder deck railings are the simplest types to make and install.
Deck railings contain a top rail and a bottom rail, side rails and may also contain bulging posts, balusters and hand rails. They come in a variety of styles and can be made from different materials including iron, aluminum, natural timber, wood composite materials and also transparent glass. They are readily accessible, but believe it or not, you can make a deck railing by yourself. Are you curious? Heres how:

Materials Required For Deck Railing:

  • 2 x 2 inches wood
  • Carriage bolts
  • 2 x 4 inches wood
  • 2 x 6 inches wood
  • Galvanized screws
  • 1 can varnish stain
  • Tools Required:
  • Wood saw
  • Electric drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Paintbrush
  • Knife
  • Instructions To Deck Railings:

#1. Get rid of any wood or material that is connected to the deck so that you will locate the rim joist which is the outermost part of the flooring.
#2. Use 2 x 6 inches wood to create the upper railing and attach it for the time being to the deck by using a screwdriver and galvanized screws.
#3. Using your wood saw cut the 2 x 2 inches wood to the relevant height for the spindles.
#4. Use the electric drill and make two holes into every spindle. One hole must be drilled approximately 1 1/2 inches from the base of the deck. The other hole should be made 1 ½ inches from the top and the outside of the deck. These holes must be smaller than the carriage bolts.
#5. For strength and firmness, bolt the spindles into position with the carriage bolts.
#6. Cut the 2 x 4 inches wood with the saw to the correct lengths to make spindles. Ensure that they are the same lengths as any mistake will be obvious.
#7. Using your screwdriver, join the sections you cut to each spindle using the galvanized screws.
#8. Permanently screw the railings to the deck at this stage. Screw through the bottom to raise the railing.
#9. Use knife to pry open the can of varnish stain.
#10. Take paintbrush and slightly dip it into the can of varnish stain to soak up a little.
#11. Paint the railings by applying level strokes with the paintbrush and continue until the total railing is finished.

    Tips and warnings:

Always construct your deck railings in compliance with rules regarding them in your area.
Spindles should be spaced no more than nine inches apart for security.
Carefully measure at every step to get a look that is as skilled as possible.
Painting or staining the wood seals it to make it more durable.
The railing should be about 4 inches high but allow added length so that it flushes with the bottom outside section of the deck.
The stairs leading to the deck must be in position to give easy access to the deck.
Select a railing style that suits is within your means and blends with the model of your house.
